In this chapter (which you will read a part from) I will examine the notion of rhetoric as situated in epistemic tension by studying how the concept of doxa and its ascribed bipolar opposite episteme, is presented in the writings of Plato and Isocrates and discussed in research on their writings. The first step will be to map the actual use of this conceptual pair in their writings and how they have been translated. The next step will be to engage with the scholarly debate within a philologist research tradition. I will also later on follow a bridge from knowledge to speech and study how the notions of logos and mythos have been constructed by contemporary scholar in their studies of ancient thought. This chapter is not an attempt to situate rhetoric in antiquity as history, but rather to study antiquity as it has been constructed by contemporary scholars. I study the reception and construction of the history of rhetoric to anchor the tensions of contemporary rhetorical theory in its perceived history. The text wil be available from 9 December, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to participate. Language: (Text and short presentation in English, discussion: English/Swedish)
