Since 2008 I am working on a project titled Embodiments of normality – transformations from human to animal in Nordic, realistic prose 1897-2008. My main theoretical approaches are queer theory and intersektionality, but I also touch upon ecocriticism and animal studies. The aim is to investigate how the human body gains membership in a human community, thus being assured certain human rights as well as a name, a face, a voice and a place in a historical, chronological timeline. But I also take interest in how this process fails, in which the human body mentally and materially is transformed into an animal. What interests me the most is how this “becoming-human” and “becoming-animal” corresponds to as well is made possible through different social categories such as sex, class, sexuality and ethnicity. This means that I do not interpret the change from human to animal as a metaphor, but rather as a dictum on the social and political conditions for materialization. I employ mainly Judith Butler’s notion on performativity, but I also take a certain interest in Deleuze & Guattari as well as the New Materialism-school with Donna Haraway och Myra J. Hird.
