Professor Michael Jackson, Harvard Divinity School: "Viable Community: Reconciling Emotionality and Sociality in Everyday Life"

Presentation
In this talk, Professor Michael Jackson, Harvard Divinity School (USA), explores everyday violence as a violation of the boundary that human beings struggle to maintain in all societies between unregulated and regulated affect. Using ethnographic examples from fieldwork in Sierra Leone and referring to cybernetic theory, Professor Jackson explores the thesis that a society functions best, and life is most worthwhile, when collective goals are attained to the same extent that individual passions are expressed.
