Department of literature
Two main subjects are studied at the department: Literature and Rhetoric. The former subject comprises both Comparative Literature and Swedish/Scandinavian Literature. The department also teaches the literary courses within the Teacher's training in Swedish.
The department is one of the leading Swedish research settings within its fields. Scholarly interests are wide. Six focus areas are defined: 18th century studies, Writer Identity and Earning a Living, Gender, History of Rhetoric, Textual Criticism and Empirical studies of the reading process.
Our center for Sociology of Literary is the only one of its kind in Scandinavia.
About a fourth of the research output deals with non-Swedish literature and rhetoric.
Studies at both undergraduate and graduate levels are generally conducted in Swedish. However, published dissertations are frequently written in English and occasionally in other languages.
